Comic book creator Jim Mahfood has been putting smiles on the faces of readers for twenty years now with his creator-owned, quasi-punk series Grrl Scouts, about three lovely and lethal neighborhood enforcers/weed dealers. Now acclaimed video director Mike Diva has brought Grrl Scouts to life in a video short, one of nine new original shorts being released today as part of New Form Digital‘s Incubator Series 2. Incubator 2 is, as its name indicates, the second in the studio’s ongoing project to cultivate emerging digital talent to star, write, direct and produce their own scripted series. And it’s been pretty damn successful, with two of the Incubator 2 shorts, Party Girl and Shitty Boyfriends, sold to series prior to production.
Touted as “Scott Pilgrim meets Broad City” (with perhaps a touch of Josie and the Pussycats meets Attack the Block), Grrl Scouts stars Anna Akana (a guest star in Nerdist’s own Real Housewives of Horror and co-star of Geek and Sundry’s DIY series Craft Lab) as the team’s leader Gwen, Benita Robledo as the lethal Daphne, and Hope Harris as the centered Rita. It’s produced by New Form Digital in partnership with Lord Danger. Here’s the short’s trailer:
And here’s Mitchell Davis interviewing Mahfood, Diva, and the Grrl Scouts themselves…
