Watch Composer Alan Menken Discuss THE LITTLE MERMAID’s Musical Origins

Like most young women alive in the world today, Disney’s The Little Mermaid was a standout in the childhood movie-viewing experience. It was Disney! It was a girl that just wanted to fit in! Who felt bigger than her lot in life! She was curious and had trinkets and believed that she and love could truly conquer all! And so much of the emotional poignancy of that was thanks to the brilliant work of Alan Menken when it came to the film’s music. And with the release of The Legacy Collection‘s musical iteration of the Disney classic, we’ve got a sweet lil video of the composer himself discussing the classic movie musical’s score — including the process of bringing “Part Of Your World” into bubbling, babbling life.

This latest release of the film’s music includes a bevy of interesting things for the Disney obsessive in your life (even if that person is you!), including the original demos of the score, songs that missed the cut (one for Ursula sounds like necessary listening, doesn’t it?), the creation of certain now-iconic musical motifs, and the deliberate choices he and Howard Ashman made in order to elevate the story. And that doesn’t even include the lot of beautiful artwork (as seen in the header image above) created for the book-bound collectible by Lorelay Bove.

So, which amongst you are already pulling the trigger and purchasing this thing? Let us hear all about it in the comments. (It’s OK to share here, this is a safe space.)

Alan Menken could talk about putting the phone book to a melody and Id buy it. Getting more work from Menkin  and Ashmen is worth the price of admission and to continue to keep Howard’ brilliance with us is a fan’s duty. Yep, once funds are available I will be adding this.
