Watch 9 Minutes of Quentin Tarantino’s B-Roll From THE HATEFUL EIGHT

On January 8, 2016, director Quentin Tarantino’s post-Civil War western, The Hateful Eight will roll into theaters. But first, Tarantino and the Weinstein Company are bringing The Hateful Eight out in a limited “roadshow” release on Christmas Day so that moviegoers can experience the film in 70mm.

Tarantino is an ardent supporter of film over digital, and he used Ultra Panavision 70 cameras to make The Hateful Eight. Those cameras can be seen in action in a new nine-minute behind-the-scenes featurette from The Hateful Eight. But unlike most BTS featurettes, this video contains only B-roll of some of the film’s earliest scenes. To put everything into context requires a few spoilers about who the characters are and what they want. If you desire to remain unburdened by advance knowledge of the film’s story, then stop reading now. Consider yourself warned!

The early part of the footage features the first encounter between John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and a bounty hunter named Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson). Or more accurately, their first encounter that we see in this story. As the video shows, Ruth and Warren have met at least once before…they just don’t trust each other.

Jennifer Jason Lee is barely glimpsed in the video, but it’s her character, Daisy Domergue, who is being held prisoner by Ruth. She’s a wanted fugitive with a high price on her head, and Ruth is clearly paranoid that she’ll either attempt to get free or someone else will try to take his bounty away.

Another member of the so-called “Hateful Eight” is Walton Goggins’ Chris Mannix, the new sheriff of Red Rock. Like Warren, Mannix eventually talks his way into getting a ride on Ruth’s stagecoach as they try to outrun a blizzard. As you can see in the B-roll footage, Tarantino and his crew actually filmed in the snow.

The video also offers a glimpse of Michael Madsen’s Joe Gage, the fifth main character in the movie. The remaining three featured performers are Demián Bichir as Bob “the Mexican,” Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray, and Bruce Dern as former Confederate General Sanford “Sandy” Smithers.
