The Looney Tunes characters include some of the most famous cartoon creations of all time including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and several others. But surprisingly, itâs Speedy Gonzales who may soon be the star of his own animated film.
Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a Speedy Gonzales feature with producers Dylan Sellers and Eugenio Derbez. The film is said to feature a âcontemporary takeâ on the Mexican mouse with incredible speed and savvy.
Speedy Gonzales was created by Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt, with legendary voiceover artist Mel Blanc providing the characterâs voice. Speedy Gonzales made his official debut in 1955, and he frequently went up against Sylvester the cat, and he occasionally ruffled the feathers of Daffy Duck.
The original Speedy Gonzales cartoons are widely considered to have offensive racial stereotypes, which even led Cartoon Network to pull the Speedy Gonzales shorts for several years. Presumably, the new Speedy Gonzales movie will move away from some of his problematic characteristics and flesh out Speedy as a leading character. But first, the Speedy Gonzales film will need a writer and a director.
Several years ago, New Line Cinema attempted to set up a Speedy Gonzales film with George Lopez as the new voice of the title character, but that project never came to fruition.
It seems likely that the new Speedy Gonzales movie could take its cue from the characterâs more recent appearances in The Looney Tunes Show, which portrayed Speedy in a less stereotypical light. Comedian Fred Armisen provided Speedyâs voice on that series.
Warner Bros. has not yet set a date for the Speedy Gonzales movie.
