This fall, Warner Bros. is releasing a new edition of The Iron Giant on Blu-ray with two new scenes added back into the film and a new video introduction by director Brad Bird. Fathom Events is marking the occasion by bringing The Iron Giant back to theaters for a special two night event. But could the renewed interest in The Iron Giant lead to something more?
Vin Diesel (the voice of the Iron Giant itself) certainly seems to think so. In a new Facebook post, Diesel wrote âI have been very lucky to have played so many interesting charactersâ¦one of the first and one of my favorites isâ¦the Iron Giant. P.S. Donât be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.â
Sorry…weâll be VERY surprised when and if WB announces the sequel. Warner Bros. infamously fudged the marketing for The Iron Giant in 1999 and the film failed to find an audience in theaters. On home video, The Iron Giant was rediscovered and itâs become a classic.
Bird went on to direct The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and the upcoming The Incredibles 2. As for Diesel, heâs one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood who has practically willed sequels for Chronicles of Riddick and xXx into existence. Diesel has spoiled studio announcements before, and everyone here at Nerdist would love to see another Iron Giant movie with Bird at the helm.
While Bird has expressed his desire to do another traditionally drawn animated movie, itâs not likely to happen at Disney or Warner Bros. in the near future. And given that Birdâs Incredibles sequel will keep him busy for at least the next two years (or more), any Iron Giant sequel would still be very far away.
The Iron Giant two night in-theater event will take place on Wednesday, September 30 and Sunday, October 4.
