Vin Diesel Announces the Final FAST AND FURIOUS Movies

Two years ago, Universal Pictures announced plans to use Fast 8 to launch a new Fast and Furious trilogy that would wrap up the film series. Last night, Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel made the official announcement for the ninth and tenth films on his Instagram account.

Fast and Furious 9 is slated for April 19, 2019, while Fast and Furious 10 will hit on April 2, 2021—almost twenty years after the first Fast and Furious hit theaters in 2001.

Before the ninth and the tenth films in the Fast and Furious series head our way, Fast 8 still needs to have its day (which is slated to be April 14, 2017). Of course, Diesel will be back for that film alongside Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, and Jason Statham. Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray will helm Fast 8, which is expected to begin filming later this year.

Previously, Diesel had indicated Fast 8 would get back to the street racing phenomena that launched the franchise initially. Fast 8 may even be one of the first American films to be partially shot in Cuba, in addition to planned locations in New York and Atlanta. There are even rumors that suggest that Fast 8 will also film in Russia and Iceland.

While Diesel and Universal are playing up the idea that the core Fast and Furious films will end with the tenth installment, don’t be too shocked if they don’t stick to that promise. As long as the films are wildly successful, Fast and Furious will continue in some form. Last year, Diesel acknowledged plans to spinoff some of the supporting Fast and Furious characters into their own films, including Johnson’s Luke Hobbs.
