Itâs become a recurring trend on YouTube to place the Star Wars characters into TV-inspired opening credits. Weâve seen Star Wars mashed-up with the opening sequences of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, McGyver, and Dallas. But now itâs time for Star Wars to meet True Detective.
The video was released yesterday by the Star Wars Minute podcast just in time for the second season finale of True Detective…which wasnât quite as well received as the first season’s conclusion. Regardless of the creative success or failures of either season of True Detective, the original opening sequence from the first season is absolutely among the all-time great TV credits. The Handsome Familyâs “Far From Any Road” was so perfectly matched to the imagery of True Detective that many fans assumed that the song had been written for the show.
As it turns out, âFar From Any Roadâ also plays pretty well with the Star Wars characters. The video recreates the shots from True Detective Season 1 as closely as possible, with some minor changes as necessary. The use of R2D2âs eye at the 35 second mark is particularly inspired. Nor is the video limited only to characters from the first Star Wars film. Lowbot and Lando represent for The Empire Strikes Back, while Leia appears in her slave bikini from Return of the Jedi. Even the Star Wars prequel actors get added to the mix late in the video.
Star Wars Minute has also posted a side-by-side comparison of the original True Detective credits and their Star Wars mash-up:
