First VENOM Teaser Trailer Shows a Tortured Tom Hardy

Spider-Man may have footing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony’s Spidey spinoffs are going their own way later this year with the first ever Venom solo film. Tom Hardy is stepping into the title role as Eddie Brock in a universe where he isn’t one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains, but his own hero… or anti-hero… or worse. We’re not quite sure yet, as the first teaser trailer for Venom, which dropped today, holds back on the reveal of the full alien symbiote while putting the focus on Eddie himself.

The trailer really doesn’t give us much to go on about the film’s story, but we can probably infer that Eddie is seriously ill given the initial shot of him inside an MRI machine, before he freaks out during a scan. The video only provides a quick glimpse of the symbiote, but it may have also hinted at the crash that brought it to Earth. Michelle Williams also briefly appears in the teaser as Ann Weying, Eddie’s ex-wife from the comics.

How can Venom function outside of his comic book backstory with Spider-Man? It looks like Eddie’s origin story will be reenvisioned for the big screen while also drawing some influence from the “Lethal Protector” storyline that gave Venom a more heroic direction. It’s also unclear if the Venom symbiote is the only one that made it to Earth, or if we’ll also see the debut of Carnage and the other evil symbiotes in this film as well. We’ll learn more when Venom hits theaters on Friday, October 5.
