If the previous trailers for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets have looked familiar, it’s probably because sci-fi movies have been cribbing from Valerian and Laureline for decades. Director Luc Besson has been very open about the influence of the Valerian comics on The Fifth Element, and this summer, Besson will have the opportunity to reintroduce Valerian and Laureline to a new generation of fans.
The final trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets debuted this morning, and it played up Besson’s quest to bring Valerian to the big screen. This trailer also went far beyond the previously released footage and showed off more of the creatures and alien environments on Alpha, the proverbial city referenced in the title. Thousands of alien species have come together and made Alpha a shining symbol of unity in the universe. Now, someone wants to destroy everything that Alpha stands for…and that’s where Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) come in.
The new trailer doesn’t really touch upon the unique partnership between Valerian and Laureline, but it does give them a very strict deadline of 10 hours to halt the threat to Alpha. And history may not be on their side.
Besson is loosely adapting the story from Ambassador of the Shadows, the sixth volume of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières’ Valerian and Laureline. Fans of the comic may notice that the underwater creatures in the trailer resemble the Marmaka. And we’re thinking that the Omelites may be the movie’s version of the Zool.
