Tyrese Keeps Hinting that He May Be GREEN LANTERN

A few weeks back, rumors began circulating that actor Tyrese Gibson, best known for his roles in the Fast and the Furious and Transformers franchises, was gunning for another big geek friendly part: that of Green Lantern John Stewart for Warner Brothers’ DC Cinematic Universe.

In fact, the rumors were coming straight from the horse’s mouth. Tyrese was using his various social media accounts to post fan art of himself as Stewart, and in some cases, himself as John Stewart together with Chris Pine as Hal Jordan. It started when the rumor mill was churning with stories that the Justice League film would lead to a Green Lantern Corps team-up movie (and thanks to news coming out of Comic-Con, we know the second part of that rumor at least is true).

Although Comic-Con came and went without the last crucial slot in the Justice League filled (many were hoping the entire Justice League would be formally announced and take their bows in Hall H, similar to how Marvel announced the Avengers in 2010), Tyrese Gibson has not given up his dreams of wearing a power ring. In an interview with Collider, he said he’d had more than one meeting with Warner Brothers about taking the part, and had this to say:

I am going to commit myself to this process, of seeing what’s possible … I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I would be the best Green Lantern, and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there’s a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing. So I would love to confirm something today but I can’t. We’ll just keep following up.

The “six billion dollars in box office receipts” that Tyrese refers to are of course for the Fast and the Furious and Transformers movies he’s appeared in, which comes off as a little cocky, suggesting that HE is the reason those movies made that much money, but hey…cockiness often comes with the power ring. In fact, John Stewart was once so cocky and full of himself that he accidentally let a whole planet die. So maybe Tyrese really is the best man for the job.

While Green Lantern Corps isn’t scheduled to hit theaters for another five years, Green Lantern John Stewart is expected to be part of the Justice League movie line-up, and that movie comes out in 2017, so Warner Brothers is going to have to make a decision on at least one Corp member pretty soon.
