The ability to get your thoughts out into the social media landscape in a concise manner while still managing to appear engaging, knowledgeable, and witty is no easy task. On Twitter, it’s even more difficult, since that first sentence was already 32 characters over its 140 limit. Perhaps that’s why, according to Recode.net, the social media giant known for its strict format is planning to branch out into long-form.
While it still may only be conjecture from unidentified people familiar with the inner workings of Twitter, there has been talk of the company developing some sort of product that would allow for longer tweets. Sources have shared that interim CEO Jack Dorsey is open to new ideas for the social media network to broaden their audience.
Would the ability to long-form tweet be good for the company? Would it take away from the essence of Twitter as it stands now? Whether you agree with it or not, Shakespeare’s famous saying “Brevity is the soul of wit” has proven to be true time and time again. (It’s also something I’m constantly reminded of in my writing for this very site, so I should probably wrap this up already.)
The 140 character cap is, if anything, something that lets Twitter stand out against the rest of social media platforms. Would we really obsessively scour our feeds as much as we do if everyone got to write as much as they wanted? Would it even be read?
This new format might also ruin the art form in which Twitter personalities and, let’s face it, some of our favorite comedians are now so brilliant at harnessing. Anyone who follows Patton Oswalt is well aware what can be done by exploiting the 140 character limit to hilarious effect.
Nothing’s official yet, but what would you think of a long-form Twitter? Would it just be another Facebook status update dumping ground or would it revolutionize the way we consume content? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
