TWIN PEAKS to Return as 9-Episode Showtime Series in 2016

After years of speculation and rumors, further fueled by mysterious tweets from both series creators Mark Frost and David Lynch this weekend, it’s finally official: Twin Peaks, the super influential cult television series that ran on ABC from 1990-1991, is coming back  in 2016 on Showtime. According to a report from Deadline, this will be a limited run of 9 episodes all written by Mark Frost and directed by David Lynch. Lynch has not directed a feature film since 2006′ Inland Empire, and this will also mark his return to television after a long break and hints of retirement.

Twin Peaks ended on a rather spectacular cliffhanger in 1991, and without going into detail about exactly what happens (hey, they are people still discovering the show via Netflix and Blu-ray; there is no statute of limitations when it comes to Twin Peaks and spoilers) I will say that the show did hint that the story would be continued “in twenty-five years.” Now it looks like David Lynch and Mark Frost are making good on that promise. No other details are known as of right now, but one character you can bet will be back is Kyle MacLachlan, reprising his role of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper.

So what changed Lynch’s mind, after saying for years that a Twin Peaks revival was “as dead as a doornail?” Who knows, but working on editing The Missing Pieces for this past summer’s Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set may have changed Lynch’s mind about returning to that world. In the meantime, below is the official announcement video that Showtime released to let fans know that the very long wait will soon be over.
