TV-Cap: TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2 Motion Poster, SIRENS Cancelled, and More

You ever have those weeks where you completely lose track of what day it is? Please humor me and say yes–don’t leave me hanging. I had no idea it was Thursday until I looked to see what my TiVo is recording while I’m away, and I think it says something that I check my schedule using that indirect route rather than just looking at a calendar. I’m putting my television obsession to good use though by gathering the TV news highlights from the last 24 hours. Please enjoy a poster for Season 2 of True Detective, an update on The Muppets reboot, some Girl Meets World nostalgia, and more.

We Make Our Own Beds. Never let anyone tell you the world is a place full of sunshine and daisies. It just isn’t true, and the full spectrum of bleakness that is humanity is on display in HBO’s True Detective. The show is back with Season 2 on June 21, and a new motion poster emphasizes the tone. “We get the world we deserve.” Accurate. [Nerdist]

Goodbye, Favorite Paramedics. I have to keep tissues on hand when I watch USA’s Sirens because I laugh so hard I cry frequently, but now I need those tissues for another reason. USA has canceled the half-hour comedy after two seasons. My week won’t be the same without the sharp comedy starring Michael Mosley, Kevin Daniels, and Kevin Bigley. Rude, USA. Rude. [Deadline]

Treat Yo Self. Was a starring role in a Netflix comedy original ever part of Tom and Donna’s “Treat Yo Self” days on Parks and Rec? It should have been because Aziz Ansari is taking the lead in a 10-episode series executive produced by Michael Schur. There’s no title yet and the concept is being kept under wraps, but I’m already optimistic. [TVLine]

Dragon Baby. How often do family reunions go well on Once Upon a Time? I don’t have data in front of me, but I’m guessing there’s a fifty-fifty chance bringing Lily (Agnes Bruckner) into contact with her long-lost mom Maleficent will end poorly. Emma tracks down her old friend/Maleficent’s dragon baby in this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time. Flip through more photos from “Lily” at Give Me My Remote.

All the Nostalgia. I fondly remember spending the Friday nights of my adolescence watching Boy Meets World on the TGIF lineup, and its sequel, Girl Meets World, brings back memories–especially when previous cast members make cameo appearances. Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) will be back in the Season 2 premiere on May 11, and Eric Matthews (Will Friedle) will make his first appearance on the series on May 15. [TVLine]

Keeping Busy. J.K. Simmons is one hell of a talented actor, but his skills have come more into the spotlight thanks to Whiplash. Simmons’s next project is a starring role in a new series on Starz called Counterpart. The show’s being called “an espionage thriller with a metaphysical twist,” and Starz is looking at picking it up for two seasons out of the gate. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simmons’s Harold Silk/Prime is “a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency, who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret when he figures out the agency he works for is guarding a secret: A crossing to parallel dimension.”

Looking Backwards, Then Forward. The Ogre is a tricky beast to trap (anytime I see the word “ogre” I can’t help think but think about Shrek so well done DreamWorks), and he went after Barbara Gordon in this week’s Gotham. “Under the Knife” saw the Ogre torture Barbara in order to get to Jim Gordon. Yeah, Gotham isn’t always super nice to its female characters. Read Joe’s recap of the episode and then look ahead to a new, fiercer look for Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Fish Mooney. Entertainment Weekly showed off Mooney’s new style, but Mooney won’t have long to enjoy the badass ‘do because Pinkett-Smith isn’t returning for Season 2.

Getting Personal. Do you need to know more about the dreams and hopes of your favorite Muppet? If The Muppets television reboot happens, that’s what you’ll get. The series from Bill Prady and Bob Kushell will follow the Muppets around as they handle the ins and outs of making a new TV show; the story will be shot like a mock-documentary. And the twist? We’ll explore the personal lives of the Muppets for the first time. “The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.” As long as the words dark and gritty don’t get tossed in, I’m open.
