TV-Cap: PLAYING HOUSE Gets Renewed, Obama on THE COLBERT REPORT, Plus Cuba Gooding Goes O.J.

Oh me, oh my, oh golly and gee: it’s Wednesday, TV-Cappers! And you know what that means? It’s a day that ends in ‘y’ that isn’t the weekend, so we’ve got another round-up of all the good news fit to print (that we have time to compile into a wee list)! Why we’ve got details on the super-exciting renewal of Playing House, why Cuba Gooding Jr.’s going to have some glove problems on American Crime Story, and a video clip of President Barack Obama trying on The Colbert Report for a size (hey — it’s never too early to start looking into post-retirement options).

So, you know — it’s a very full day indeed! Let’s get to steppin’, shall we?

Cuba as OJ: Ryan Murphy’s latest anthology series — a spin-off of American Horror Story — titled American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson has shown its star the money. Cuba Gooding Jr. will star as the aforementioned totally-not-a-murderer-because-gloves former football star. Murphy’s go-to lady of fantastical acting, Sarah Paulson, will play prosecutor Marcia Clark, who lost the case because she got a haircut. Color us intrigued, Murphman! [Deadline]

Thank Bosephus: Oh my goodness, we did it, you guys. We did it — we finally got USA Network to come around after months and months of begging that they do it. But they did it! What is it they did, you ask? Why, the network renewed Playing House for a second season, thank Xenu and everyone else hanging out in the big cloud palace upstairs! Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham’s very excellent freshman series won the hearts of many a television obsessive with its endearing-yet-absurdist behavior and general hilarity, so we’re just happy as a catfished clam right now. (Which doesn’t make any sense at all but just imagine it means something really great.) Oh and the episodes will premiere a week early if you have video on demand so voracious watching will be voracious. AND HOW! Plus, the girls made this pitch-perfect video to share their excitement and well goddamnit we’re just so tickled and overjoyed. Let’s party, jammers!

Aaron Sorkin Reacts: We were at the Writers’ Guild Foundation Q&A and heard The Newsroom writer fight back. [Nerdist]

Teen Titans are GO!: TNT’s forthcoming comic book series based on the Teen Titans was confirmed in the fall, but word on the street has been decidedly mum since then. Until now! DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that they “shoot the pilot next year!” So add that to the ever-expanding list of superhero-y, DC and Marvel things currently taking over television, which includes Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Agent Carter, Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Constantine, Supergirl, Krypton, Jessica Jones, and Powers. Whoa what SLIM PICKINGS all you comic book fans have in the television world! You poor things. [ComingSoon]

Community‘s Big Surprise: Chevy Chase is returning for a cameo! Who said miracles are impossible? [Nerdist]

It’s Obama Time: Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report is pulling out all the mother-loving stops for its final episodes. I mean, seriously big ones — like having President Barack Obama come on and take over the show, pretending to be Stephen, for an entire segment. Too good! Even if it was all just shilling for Obamacare sign-ups, who cares? After all, he’s never going to reach those coveted younguns with his message of affordable health insurance because “they watch comedy shows, and I just don’t see the president going on one of those. They’re beneath his dignity.” Heh heh heh.

Amy Empowers: Oh that Amy Schumer. Is there anything she can’t do? The comedian and star of Inside Amy Schumer has decided to also adorn the Executive Producer hat for a man-on-the-street style comedy starring Rachel Feinstein. The stand-up and Last Comic Standing finalist will perform various social experiments and sketches out in the world to make the hahas happen. So get excited for that! [The A.V. Club]

Wayward Pines Premiere-a-palooza: Well looky here! Apparently Fox has decided to go big or go home when it comes to premiering their M. Night Shyamalan series. On May 14th at 9PM, Wayward Pines will premiere domestically and in 125 countries, the biggest day-and-date launch of a series ever in the world. Ever! In the world! Is the spoiler that Matt Dillon is actually a child that can see dead people? [Deadline]

I’m Afraid of Americans: Particularly when The Americans in question are KGB spies, like in this new teaser for season three! [Nerdist]

Serious question: do you think there are too many superhero shows coming to television these days? Let us know in the comments.
