It’s the middle of the week, almost the end of the month, and I’m ready for the weekend so I can spend two days catching up on the television I’ve missed because of recent travel. It’s good to have life goals, right? I’m going to start making a shopping list for all the snacks I’ll need to get through some serious binging but while I do that, you should catch up on some TV tidbitsâyou won’t need an entire weekend, I promise. Today’s round-up has the first trailer for Starz’s Flesh and Bone, news about another Dragon Ball series, a commercial featuring Stan Lee teaching cameo school, and more.
Not for the Fainthearted. “Dark and gritty” isn’t a phrase only applied to comic books. The world of ballet has a seedy underbelly, and it looks like it will be exposed again in Starz’s Flesh and Bone. The drama stars actual dancer Sarah Hay (who also appeared in Black Swan). The first trailer makes my toes hurt. Flesh and Bone premieres on November 8. [Vulture]
Power Boost. What does time even mean? It seems like just yesterday I was enjoying Dragon Ball Z, but it’s actually been 18 years since new Dragon Ball was produced. Cue the part where I realize I was in high school 18 years ago and feel old. Anyway, more Dragon Ball! The series is coming back in Japan in July and will be a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z. Think about all the new kids who are going to discover this franchise and all the new cosplay! [Nerdist]
Long Lost Family. Remember Claire Novak? She’s the daughter of Jimmy Novak, the human who long ago became a vessel for Castiel. And Claire’s back in the picture in tonight’s Supernatural and has a lead on her missing mother. Cas and the Winchesters try to help Claire, but they encounter more than they bargained for because the show isn’t called Supernormal. See a gallery of pics from the episode at TV Fanatic.
Hosts with the Most. Pretend this news item comes with a side of music and dancing: the hosts of the 2015 Tony Awards have been announced. The ceremony will air on CBS on June 7, and Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming will preside over the festivities. [The Hollywood Reporter]
King of Cameos. The difference between cameo acting and regular acting is subtle. Almost indiscernible. Luckily, we have Stan Lee to teach us. The vaunted comic book creator has made goodness knows how many cameos in Marvel films from Spider-Man to Big Hero 6, and a new TV commercial from Audi shows he’s started teaching at cameo school. The likes of Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and Michael Rooker put in cameos at cameo school–or are they just doing regular acting? You be the judge. [CBR]
Banished Demigod Going Primetime. When I hear news about cartoons on TV, it’s often about good shows being canceled or moved to unattractive time slots. Not in this case. Fox’s animated comedy Golan the Insatiable is stepping up from the Animation Domination High Def block to primetime. The cartoon about a demigod warlord named Golan the Insatiable (Rob Riggle) who’s been banished to Earth and befriends a nine-year-old girl, Dylan (Aubrey Plaza), with goth tendencies will increase from 15 minutes to 30 minutes and premiere on May 31 at 9:30pm ET/PT. If you’ve never heard of Golan, you can catch up on Hulu. [TVLine]
Telling It Like It Is. Jon Stewart didn’t hold back on Monday’s The Daily Show. He never does. It’s one of many reasons why he’s so great. He spent the majority of the showing shaming CNN because they covered the White House Correspondents’ Dinner instead of the riots in Baltimore over the weekend. He even had Jessica Williams appear as Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games to drive the point home. [The Hollywood Reporter]
Weekend Update Ponderings. Fans of Saturday Night Live know the Weekend Update segment has been up and down over the years. But after Cecily Strong’s strong showing at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, our own Clark Wolfe wondered why she was replaced on Weekend Update. Read her thoughts on the topic here at Nerdist.
