TV-Cap: JESSICA JONES and DEFENDERS to Film Back to Back

Are you even ready for the amount of television news I’m about to dump into your lap? Grab a cup of your beverage of choice and settle in because today’s TV-Cap is packed. We have news about a replacement for an American Gods actor who had to leave the project, an update on some of Netflix’s Marvel shows, word on DC Comics’ Powerless, a report about Captain Jack on Doctor Who, and more. Whew.

Stacking Up. When you need to film series with the same actors, why not line them up one after another? Krysten Ritter told Digital Spy Netflix will be doing that with The Defenders and Jessica Jones. She said, “They’ll be back-to-back. I don’t know if they’ll overlap a little bit.” Read more of her comments on the ending of season one and more at Nerdist.

Free and Clear. AMC’s adaptation of Preacher will debut on May 22, and to promote it, they’ve teamed up with DC Comics to release 100,000 free copies of Preacher #1 by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon with a snazzy new cover tied to the television series. The comic will be available in a digital format on May 13 and in stores on May 18. [Comic Book Resources, Image: DC Comics]

Everyday Hero. NBC has handed a series order DC Comics’ comedy Powerless. Vanessa Hudgens stars in the comedy as an insurance adjuster who works at a company that provides coverage for superhero-inflicted damage. Hudgens’ character faces a superhero and becomes a hero of sorts to her coworkers. The cast also features Alan Tudyk, Danny Pudi, and Christina Kirk. [Nerdist, Image: NBC]

Rumor Mill. What if Captain Jack returned to Doctor Who? Just think about the possibility. It’d be rather tremendous, wouldn’t it? And it could be happening. The rumor came up because John Barrowman was promoting a book signing in Cardiff and mentioned in a video on Facebook, “I will be back in Cardiff in about a week and a half… but I’m not telling you what for!” Oh, really? [Nerdist]

Changing Up. The departure of Sean Harris from American Gods left the role of Mad Sweeney open on the Starz series, and they’ve found a replacement. Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is the New Black) will play the leprechaun Mad Sweeney [Deadline]

Spinoff Steps. Progress is finally happening for the Sons of Anarchy spinoff at FX. They’ve given the show a title: Mayans MC. Kurt Sutter and Elgin James are set as co-creators and producers, and James will write the pilot. Mayans will have a similar tone as Sons of Anarchy but through a “Latino lens.” [Deadline]

Extreme Reaction. The story of Dorne in HBO’s Game of Thrones hasn’t played out the same way as it has in A Song of Ice and Fire, and apparently fans have feelings about it. Fixing Dorne Productions has taken to Kickstarter with the “Fixing Dorne” project. They’re asking for a mere $20 million to “write, produce, and distribute a “Dorne Replacement” for HBO’s Game of Thrones.” Setting up a Kickstarter is a lot of work to put into a joke… [Nerdist]

New and the Same. Netflix and DreamWorks Animation TV are bringing a fresh take on Voltron to the small screen with Voltron: Legendary Defender. The series will drop on the streaming service on June 10, and a new trailer shows some of the story changes. [Nerdist]

Joust Have Fun. Renaissance faires are scenarios made for laughs, and a creative team partially comprised of folks who worked on Mystery Science Theater 3000 are focusing on the comedic aspects of the events. They’re Kickstarting a series called RenFest, which focuses on the ins and outs of planning a faire—it’s no small undertaking. [Nerdist]

Nuclear Attacks and God. The CW doubled down once again with villains who want to remake the world, and we have recaps for you to enjoy. Damien Darhk started to wreck the planet in Arrow, and the Darkness took next steps to wipe the slate clean in Supernatural.

Do you want to see more Captain Jack in Doctor Who? Let me know your thoughts on that and anything/everything else in the comments.
