Every kid who grew up in the ’90s lost it this week over the first trailer for Detective Pikachu, the Pokémon movie starring Ryan Reynolds as the (now very talkative) beloved yellow furball. And in less than 24 hours, the internet has gone and made something awesome even more awesome, by making Detective Pikachu go full grim ‘n’ gritty film noir.
I dunno guys, the tone of this new Detective Pikachu movie seems kind of weird to me… pic.twitter.com/ng4GeqFOS9

First, the folks at The Ringer made a trailer for the movie in the style of HBO’s True Detective, and now in response, another fan on Twitter by the name of Jay Ballis has created opening credits that use the theme music and graphics from the real True Detective mashed up with footage from the Pokémon movie. You can watch the full opening credits in the tweet above.
Surprisingly, this all ends up working oddly well together. Heck, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that True Detective Pikachu would probably end up being better than the real True Detective’s second season. Am I right? Maybe what that season needed was more little anime critters running around, and less Vince Vaughn having tantrums and busting kneecaps.
And maybe there is another Pokémon connection to the gritty HBO drama we’re all missing: True Detective season one had the creepy Yellow King, and Pikachu is also bright yellow…. hmmm, maybe the idea of True Detective Pikachu is not so crazy after all!
