Over two years ago, Disney abruptly canceled plans for the third Tron movie, even though it reportedly was only a few months away from filming. The reasons behind that decision are unclear, but it seems like Tron 3 simply wasn’t a priority for Disney. Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and star Garrett Hedlund have previously insisted that the sequel “isn’t totally dead.” But Jeff Bridges may have hit upon the idea that could revitalize the franchise.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bridges was asked about the ongoing Tron 3 rumors and replied “Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard those rumors too. I hope that happens. I think Joe’s got the script and everything, you know. Yeah, I don’t know that I’m supposed to talk about it or not. I don’t know. It should be the first virtual reality movie, you know? Wouldn’t that be cool…to see Tron in that world?”

Yes, it would be cool to see Tron in that world. But that would be hard, considering that Bruce Boxleitner declared that he was “done with Tron” after Disney canceled Tron 3. But the first two Tron movies have largely been about Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn. To keep the narrative intact, Bridges should definitely return despite Flynn’s apparent demise in Tron: Legacy.

How would that work? By going deeper into the machine. VR allows viewers to have an entirely different experience than passively watching a movie. Imagine if Tron 3 was a first-person journey into a virtual afterlife for Kevin Flynn. That could give us a new digital world that we’ve never seen in the franchise, and a virtual reality could potentially give fans the chance to explore that world in great detail. If Tron 3 does go VR, it would also have to be determined whether the POV would be from Flynn’s perspective, through another character’s eyes, or an omniscient journey through the narrative.

The important takeaway is that virtual reality can potentially make fans feel like they’re actually inside the machine with the characters. VR technology is getting more impressive all of the time, and it makes perfect sense to go in that direction. The original Tron was a groundbreaking film for the advent of CGI animation. It would be very fitting if Tron‘s second sequel was also on the cutting edge of technology, with a unique virtual reality hook of its own.
