At some point, there’s going to be a Hunger Games for franchises hoping to be the next Hunger Games. Here we have the next contender: The Maze Runner, based on the best-selling book by James Dashner.
Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up in The Glade, surrounded by a crowd of other boys running a little bit of a “Lord of the Flies”-style kid civilization. But every morning, the massive walls surrounding the Glade open up and someone heads out into the maze just beyond, in hopes of finding a way out. No one wants to get stuck in the maze at night: no one makes it out. When a girl arrives for the first time ever, just after Thomas, it seems like suddenly everything’s going to change. The movie features Thomas Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, Ki Hong Lee, and Blake Cooper as well.
It looks supremely dark with a whole lot of kid violence and some legitimately terrifying kid-hungry monsters. Check out the trailer:
The Maze Runner hits U.S. theaters in September.
