Dust off your old bomber jacket, dig out your old Kenny Loggins tapes, and get ready to race down the highway to the danger zone, because Tom Cruise once again has the need… the need for speed. Somehow, someway, Top Gun 2 is really going to happen, as evidenced by Maverick himself sharing a photo on Twitter announcing that production has officially begun.

Over three decades after the original action film about jet fighter pilots roared into theaters, the long-discussed sequel looks to be formally underway as of Cruise’s Twitter post (which we first spotted at CinemaBlend). Although Cruise, who is 55 years old and must have a portrait of a very old man in his attic, announced in May of 2017 that the followup was going to happen, reports it was “moving forward” have been around long enough that even this never felt like a guarantee. At this point, we don’t even know for sure if Val Kilmer will be in the film, despite his saying that he would be back in 2015. (We’re betting the Iceman will cometh.)
What we do know is the film’s IMDb page has its title as Top Gun: Maverick, with Joseph Kosinski rumored to be directing. He has experience leading a long-awaited sequel, having directed Tron: Legacy, and he has also worked with Cruise before in Oblivion. Peter Craig (The Town, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2) and Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) wrote the script.
We don’t know who is writing the film’s theme song, but hopefully the answer is no one, because the franchise already has the greatest track in cinematic history.
What do you hope to see in the sequel? We have the need! The need for your thoughts in the comments below!
