TOMB RAIDER Director Wants New Lara Croft To Be ‘A Real Human Being’

Last year, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug was signed to direct the Tomb Raider reboot, and end Lara Croft’s 13 year (and counting!) cinematic drought. While Uthaug’s new Tomb Raider film is likely to take its cues from the more recent games than the classic ones, Uthaug has a very simple priority: making Lara Croft more relatable.

“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well,” said Uthaug during a new interview with IGN. “I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”

Uthaug also praised the rebooted Tomb Raider games which featured a much younger Lara Croft as she discovered what it took to become an adventurer. Angelina Jolie’s Lara from the first two Tomb Raider movies was very much at the top of her game. The new cinematic Lara Croft will probably be more of a rookie than an experienced Tomb Raider.

As for the tone of the movie, Uthaug cited the original Indiana Jones adventure as another inspiration for his Tomb Raider movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favorite films growing up, so it’s definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre,” added Uthaug. “I think we’ll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what’s going on feel like it’s going on for real.”

Uthaug’s newest film, The Wave is currently out in limited release. Tomb Raider is slated to be his English language debut.
