Life in a high-rise like those made by storied and acclaimed architect Anthony Royal can be a real headtripâjust ask his latest tenant, Dr. Robert Laing. And in our exclusive clip from the Ben Wheatley-directed, Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons-fronted film High-Rise (yes, based on the ’70s novel of the same name by J.G. Ballard), you get a look at just how disorienting a place it truly is, living amongst the clouds.
(We should note, the rest of the post contains very minor spoilers if you’re unaware of the premise of the film and book on which it’s based.)
After moving into an apartment in one of Royal (Iron)’s latest buildings, Laing (Hiddleston) has finally gained access to the rooftop and what he finds there is truly surreal and astounding. No, we’re not talking about Royal’s choice of white-on-white everything (although that is very surreal in general); we mean the sheep and Bo Peep wandering about an idyllic English garden that would surely impress even the fanciest of Lords and Ladies. (It certainly took Laing aback.)
But High-Rise is about more than sick rooftop gardening tips â it’s also a thrilling science fiction epic that follows the social hierarchy of the building and the antagonistic events that unfold as the well-to-do inhabitants of the building become increasingly more hermit-y and out of control.
Needless to say, we’re pretty excited about its OnDemand debut TODAY (April 28th) and when it hits theaters on May 13, 2016. The film also stars Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, and Keeley Hawes.
