Tom Hiddleston Explains Why Loki Wasn’t in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Several Marvel fans may have gone to see Avengers: Age of Ultron with the expectation that Tom Hiddleston would make a cameo appearance as Loki. Blame Idris Elba, he’s the one who spilled the beans about his surprise cameo as Heimdall alongside Hiddleston’s Loki. But while Elba’s scene remained in the finished film, Loki was nowhere to be seen.

During a recent interview, Hiddleston finally offered an explanation as to why his role was cut despite the fact that he shot his scenes for Age of Ultron. And it is a reasonable excuse, if a little disappointing to hear.

“I was part of the dream sequence for the character of Thor, and I shot for a day, enjoyed it very much,” said Hiddleston. “Then I received a phone call from Kevin Feige, actually Joss emailed me, basically Kevin said that in test screenings audiences had over-emphasized Loki’s role. So they thought that because I was in it I was controlling Ultron, and that it was imbalancing people’s expectations. So Joss and Kevin were like, ‘Let’s cut it because it’s confusing people.’”

Barring an unexpected cameo in Captain America: Civil War or Doctor Strange, Hiddleston’s next appearance as Loki should be Thor: Ragnarok, which will presumably resolve the cliffhanger at the end of Thor: The Dark World that left Loki in charge of Asgard after assuming the identity of his adopted father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

Last week, Taika Waititi reportedly entered negotiations to direct Thor: Ragnarok, with production slated to begin next summer. Once Waititi’s deal is in place, casting announcements for Thor: Ragnarok should follow. The film will be released on November 3, 2017.
