TITANIC From 8-Bit Cinema Is Near, Far, Wherever You Are

The Cinefix team is jumping right in (heh) to what was, for a very long time, The Biggest Movie In The Whole World. Seriously, from ’97 onward, pop culture could not escape Titanic‘s clutches. I still believe that “My Heart Will Go On” was bio-engineered in a top secret lab to be the ultimate ballad ever written, and I want the American Congress to do the right thing and investigate. I loved that song, and then I hated that song, and then I loved to hate to love that song, and even still today I get all of the physical and emotional feels [Editor’s Note: Emotional feels? Surely not!] when that Celtic flute starts up. DAMN YOU CELINE. I have to say though, it sounds mighty palatable as a chiptune melody.

If you were wondering if 8-Bit Cinema recreated the Kate Winslet “draw me like one of your French girls” scene, the answer is yes. I’ve seen a great deal of the 8-Bit Cinema repertoire, but this is the first time I recall such intimate moments being recreated in such funny and adorable ways. The handprint on the car window is even still in tact! Considering they condensed the eight three hour movie down to just three minutes, they really managed to work in all of the memorable images. The below-deck dance party is presented as a button-mashing scene a la a primitive version of DDR. The Unsinkable Molly Brown even makes a small appearance when she bestows Jack with his evening formalwear. (Open Wardrobe. “You received a Tuxedo.”) And naturally, the final and most joked-about scene wherein Rose lets go of Jack after saying that she’ll “never let go”–yes, yes, I know she meant it spiritually–is presented in all its glory as Jack turns pale blue and sinks into the wavy ocean abyss. Later, Jack! :*(
