Throthgar’s Top Ten RPGs: Role-Playing At Its Best

Most non-fans of role-playing games look at the genre as a weird video game version of LARPing. But be they RPGs with old school turn-based style combat or the more accessible real time command RPG titles like Fallout, some of the greatest stories ever told lie comfortably within the RPG genre.

The wonderful wizards of Tyrannicon have once again constructed a covenant list, this one highlighting the most prominent RPG titles to ever see the light of day. Did Japanese RPG games dominate the list from top to bottom? Which Final Fantasy title(s), if any, were able to make the cut? These are ten games that would make any gamer adhere to the wise words of the great Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: “Know your role and shut your mouth.” Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Throthgar’s top ten best RPG games:

  1. John Keyser says:

Shenmue is a great game. It’s not an RPG. Ocarina of Time is a great game. It’s not an RPG. There is no Dragon Quest nor Shin Megami Tensei on this list. What gives?

  2. Ben Z says:

So, a game that isn’t an RPG was named best RPG? Really? Ocarina of Time is an action-adventure game with some light puzzle solving. I would say that Madden is more of an RPG than Ocarina of Time.

  3. Trey Morris says:

    Wait… no Baldur’s Gate 2?

  4. Mike Knapp says:

i’m calling bullshit FF7… if you are gonna mention a Final Fantasy you mention 6, because the bad guy wins and demolishes the planet.

  5. Joseph Knight says:

Hate the narration. I understand that its a caricature of a “gamer”, but it’s just demeaning. Stuff like that just sets the industry back. Don’t demean your audience the way the Spike videogame awards do.

I know its a bit of fluff entertainnent, but please figure out your approach to videogame coverage.

  6. vismund says:

wrf? why cant you just talk normal makes this video unwatchable, also shenmue and zelda are not rpgs.

  7. Greg says:

That really was the most annoying narration I’ve ever heard. Not sure if *all* of those were true RPG’s… but I was certainly glad to see Fallout 3 in there!

  8. Austin says:

    Well, that was crap

  9. Poet says:

    Wait, are you mocking us?

  10. bobscallion says:

This is easily and by far the worst ‘Top 10 RPG’ list I’ve ever seen. I guess I just can’t trust Nerdist when it comes to games. I’ll stick with Polaris content from now on in that regard.

  11. Brian says:

What?!? No D&D, Traveller or Gama World? What kind of RPG list is this? These are nothing more than a bunch of bullshit video games! RPG my ass!

  12. Jessica Duffy says:

Tried watching this video but could not stand listening to the narrator’s voice.
