Thrilling Adventure Hour #48: Beyond Belief, “Vampire Weekend”

Starring Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster as those married mediums Frank and Sadie Doyle. Also starring Hal Lublin, Bruce McCulloch, and Dave Foley.

Recorded August 6, 2011.
Blacker:

Half-kidding, I pitched this plot to Acker in our Supernatural office, having just listened to the previous vampire episode (podcast episode #25, “Rosemary’s Baby Shower”) and laughed at Sadie’s joke, “Vampire law? I would not watch that show.” My original idea was to have it be even more of a courtroom procedural, but as Acker wrote the first draft he came up with this very funny “mediator” character.

In addition to the always hilarious Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster — I love how Frank barely registers Sadie’s vampiric transformation in the beginning — we got to have Janet Varney return as Donna Henderson, Sadie’s vampire friend. Janet is a wonderful comic actress but she also nails every emotional turn Donna takes in this episode.

Janet is the one who brought us Bruce McCulloch. Acker and I are longtime Kids in the Hall fans, and once we knew Bruce was on board, we tried to stage a mini-KitH reunion, but we missed Scott and Kevin by a day (they were doing a show out of town). But our old pal Dave Foley happened to be around, and we were thrilled that we could have the two Kids together on our stage.

I usually get very tense when an actor loses his place in the script, but somehow when it’s Dave Foley, and it’s Bruce McCulloch, PFT, and Paget covering for him and cracking wise, it’s just charming.

Yay! I listened to that for the mini-KitH reunion but enjoyed it so much that I’ve subscribed to the podcast.

I think I’ve heard that Dave and Bruce have dyslexia, so I have to wonder if the (charming) slip-ups had something to do with that. Way to go to both of them for doing a radio play with scripts in hand!

  3. Bobby G says:

I wish I could’ve been there when Page Brewster said “sasquatch”, I’m wondering if that made Paul laugh, because it made me.

  4. Nathaniel Wedgington Hornswaggle III says:

Is there anything better than Frank and Sadie Doyle? A Foley error does come close.

  5. Rob S. says:

“There’s a teleprompter over there Mr. Foley.” I clapped at that and I know they can’t hear me. I’m just glad that Dave has some work.

This was very funny. Love KITH. And I really love the Doyles. I’ll have to catch up on more of these episodes.

  7. Aticus says:

Mini “Kids in the Hall” reunion and the Doyles? My Monday just got brighter.
