Marvel is about to expand the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book franchise with Guardians of Infinity, a new ongoing series that features members of three different Guardians of the Galaxy teams!
Dan Abnett is slated to write Guardians of Infinity, with artist Carlo Barberi. Abnett co-created the modern Guardians of the Galaxy team (Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Drax) that was also featured in the wildly popular live-action film and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy animated series.
The very first Guardians of the Galaxy team was created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan in 1969. That original team included Major Vance Astro, an astronaut from 20th Century Earth who was stuck in the year 3000 alongside his fellow Guardians, Martinex, Charlie-27, and Yondu. Later members included Starhawk, Aleta, and Nikki.
Abnett recently wrote the Guardians 3000 ongoing series that followed the original team, but Guardians of Infinity appears to be the continuation of that book following Secret Wars. According to Marvelâs description of the first issue, the opening story of Guardians of Infinity will be a time travel adventure featuring Drax, Rocket, and Groot from the modern Guardians, the Guardians 3000, and a previously unknown team called the Guardians 1000. Given the name of the third group, it suggests that there was a Guardians of the Galaxy team 1,000 years before the current events in the Marvel Universe!
Guardians of Infinity # 1 will be released in December with a special backup story by Jason Latour and Jim Cheung that finds new Guardian of the Galaxy, Ben Grimm a.k.a. The Thing and Rocket Raccoon trapped on a planet whose entire culture is based on Earthâs professional wrestling… with battles to the death in the squared circle!
