Thor’s Lost Scene From AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Sets Up INFINITY WAR

Director Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t make it to the big screen without some significant cuts. And while Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were particularly upset that Tom Hiddleston’s cameo as Loki didn’t make the final film, it turns out that the truncated scene in the Norn Cave had bigger implications for the MCU.

Two minutes of footage from the Norn cave have surfaced online, and while Loki is still nowhere to be seen, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his friend, Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd) are forced to seek answers from the Norn…by allowing them to possess Thor’s body.

Whedon’s direction of this scene and Thor’s possessed voice seem to channel Sam Raimi, as the Norn tell Erik that only “sacrifice” can defeat Ultron. The Norn also identify the Mind Stone by name and set up the two-part Avengers: Infinity War when they say “It is of the six! The Infinite Six…can not be joined or kept apart.”

Hemsworth also has a particularly good moment at the start of the clip as Thor admits his fear of the Norns and he has a very human way of getting himself ready to face them.

This scene was a more effective teaser for the next Avengers movie than Thor’s spiel at the end about getting answers. But Whedon has been very forthcoming about his battles with Marvel over what to cut and what to keep in the final version of Age of Ultron. Ultimately, Thor’s sequence in the Norn cave was significantly reduced.

Avengers: Age of Ultron hits Blu-ray and DVD on October 2. But if you don’t want to wait, the digital version is already out.
