What happens when you combine intricate algorithms, chart topping ballads from the ’90s, and a penchant for karaoke?
Well you get the art of Martin Backes and his singing machine! With some stands, screens, microphone, a custom-made computer program and some know-how, you get “What do machines sing of?”
It turns out that what seems to be half art instillation/half terrifying glimpse into the dystopian future where our machine overlords serenade us with one of the most beautiful break-up songs ever, is actually quite beautiful.
It’s described by Backes as “…a fully automated machine, which endlessly sings number-one ballads from the 1990s. As the computer program performs these emotionally loaded songs, it attempts to apply the appropriate human sentiments. This behavior of the device seems to reflect a desire, on the part of the machine, to become sophisticated enough to have its very own personality.”
That’s a absolutely terrifying statement and we should all smash our computers this very second because when the machines take over music — AND WHITNEY NO LESS — what else is there that separates us from them? I kid, of course, it’s not like the machines have learned to dance or anything yet, right?
The project is programmed to continuously sing its choice of:
- Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
- R. Kelly – I Believe I Can Fly
- Toni Braxton – Un-Break My Heart
- Bryan Adams – Everything I Do, I Do It For You
- Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On
This project is stunning when you consider the program runs endlessly with the hauntingly gorgeous tones of computer-speak doing it’s best rendition of ’90s hits. There’s something beautiful about hearing the melody but no actual words. Toward the end of the video you can hear it begin to sing R. Kelly’s “I believe I can fly” and you know what, I almost believe it can. We just need to ensure Backes doesn’t incorporate quadcopters into this thing because I don’t think anyone would be safe from a autonomous robot belting out Celine Dion.
