The Huffington Post, perhaps still on the trailing fumes of the high from the sale to AOL, decided to do a comedy map of America, selecting “The United States of Comedy: 50 Comedians From 50 States,” chosen by state of birth.
Guess who’s on it?
Hawaii: Jonah Ray.
How cool is that?
The list includes folks familiar to Nerdist readers like Patton Oswalt, Joel McHale, Zach Galifianakis, Drew Carey, Marc Maron, and many more. Some legends, too, like Carlin, Pryor, and Carson, and late-night TV talk show hosts galore (Conan, Dave, Kimmel, Jon Stewart — until Scotland becomes a state, Craig Ferguson is not eligible). But the Nerdist home team got two on the list, which is pretty damn impressive, no?
Isn’t it spelled JM J. Bullock for some reason?
Also: JM J. Bullock? Really?
Carson may have been born Iowegian but he was still a Husker 🙂 and a great skeptic!
I know I just posted but I just realized that the too-cool-for-scoop hipster who made this thing up put Tina Fey in for Pennsylvania. As much as I respect her work and admire her success, Pennsylvania rightly belongs to Bill Cosby. He’s from Philadelphia. His comedy is based ther. He set Fat Albert there. If the twenty year old who wrote this had done his research somewhere other than google he might have figured this out. #nerdrage
If they add DC it’s gotta be Dave Chapelle, but then they may need to add Puerto Rico and Guam. PR has Freddie Prinze at least, but are there any Guam comics. What about American Samoa?
I don’t think it’s necessarily chosen by birth.
Why did Sarah Silverman get New Hampshire? Seth Meyers is from New Hampshire and I think he is funnier than Sarah. Also congrats on making the list Chris and Jonah.
Louis CK was born in Washington DC and should be included!
Bill Hicks was born in Georgia, not Arkansas. He only lived there briefly when he was 18 or so. Matt Besser got screwed.
I love the fact the Aziz is representing South Carolina.
And Guzman’s from Vermont? My head asplodes.
Admittedly I’m at a bit of a loss to name any other Hawaii comics on the national stage. Just the Bumatai brothers, and I don’t know how well known they are up there on the mainland.
But that aside. Woot!
This map is flawed. Marc Maron was born in Jersey City, NJ and Joel McHale was born in Rome, Italy. Great to see the Nerdist boys represented though.
Damn Wyoming, Jim J Bullock is the best you got?
So Jonah is the one from Hawaii. Got it. Now I just have to figure out which one used to work for a mortuary.
Hell yeah! Kentucky represent!
(Gasp) Chris and I share something in common (talks fast) oh my god we can be best friends (short breath) and play video games (breath) and have parties (breath) and eat burritos (breath) and be the bestist buddies forever (uses inhaler, passes out, has dream about chris and I frolicking through flowers)
Nice work guys… Matt don’t let them give you crap ! 🙂 Just um… I don’t know how to tell you this… but I guess I just… say… it…….
GET UP ON THE !@#%ING STAGE AND PROFESSIONALLY BUST THAT COMEDY CHERRY!!!!
*yeah yeah I know you did it once in the past but this is for REALZ now!!!
Scott: I usually forget where Jonah is from, but with Matts fucking awesome Boston/MA dialect he occasionally brings out never lets me forget where he’s from!
Matt probably would’ve made it, too IF HE WOULD JUST START DOING STANDUP.
Amirite?
Huffington Post made the list too right?
RE: SCOTTS COMMENT
I guess that goes to show that nobody really pays attention enough when it comes to Matt and I. haha
Would you really choose Craig Ferguson over Billy Connolly for Scotland?
I always forget whether it’s Matt of Jonah from Hawaii. Maybe now I can remember.
