We’ve seen our fair share of video game art that took inspiration from swords; Fi and Ghirahim of The Legend of Zelda: Skyrim Sword are prime examples of this phenomenon. While not present in an actual game, some recent art by Yoshitaka Amano (who worked on the Final Fantasy series) anthropomorphized a katana into a really cool form. The piece is currently on display at the Mori Art Museum’s exhibit The Universe and Art. Check it out below.
The edgy piece just joined the very sword it took inspiration from at the Tokyo Exhibition. The sword in question (which can be viewed in the video below) was forged by master sword-smith Kunimine Okayoshi in 1898 using iron deposits from a meteorite. The cosmic beauty has captured the minds of museum guests, including Amano. Check out the video below to see the sword up close.
The otherworldliness was beautifully translated to Amano’s art of a handsome young man. The cool tones mimic the identical sword the character holds in his hand. Aside from color, the man’s pointed hair and gear evokes the sharp feeling seen in the sword. The man looks geared up and ready for battle.
It’s a shame he isn’t present in the Final Fantasy game world. Basing him on a sword offers interesting possibilities when it comes to a potential move-set. I’d love to see him gracefully slice through opponents.
