Thereâs no such thing as a fair-weather Morrissey fan; his admirers are ride-or-die. Fans will follow him from city to city, seeing multiple concert tour stops and unabashedly singing his lyrics at the top of their voices. I am of course, speaking from experience. So when Munchies highlighted Vivian Guerrero, a baker who specializes in Morrissey-themed cakes, it was like the stars aligned for two of my favorite things.
Guerrero is a huge Morrissey devotee and has attended more than 150 Morrissey concerts worldwide. Like most Smiths-obsessed fans, she takes all of his lyrics to heart and even uses them as inspiration for her baking.
Baking Morrissey-themed cupcakes for her friends, Guerrero channels the lyrics from “Unloveable” by creating black velvet with black frosting in black cupcake liners, because like the song these treats âwear black on the outside âcause black is how I feel on the inside.â
For Morrissey fan night in Los Angeles, Guerrero spent 100 hours baking a three tier showstopper for fans who came to wish the singer an unhappy 57th birthday. She incorporated a sugary version of Morrisseyâs familiar pompadour silhouette, an edible nod to Salfordâs Lads Club where The Smiths were formed, and fondant gladiolas, a favored flower of Morrissey and the ones he famously wielded in a 1980s performance on Top of the Pops.
On the top tier of this glorious ode to the Mozzfather, Guerrero created a hand-sculpted, lifelike Morrissey out of chocolate, complete with chocolate torched chest hair. The one fault of this sugary dedication to the Meat is Murder lyricist? The cake wasnât vegan. Heaven knows Moz is truly miserable now.
