Since 2000, Hugh Jackman and Wolverine have been synonymous with each other. In the seven X-Men films released so far, Hugh and the crazy Canuck have been present in of them in one way or another (Sure, First Class was merely a cameo, but he also had one of the best line reads in the entire series). Now, just like the current Marvel Comics Universe is coming to an end with Secret Wars, so too is Jackmanâs tenure as Wolverine.
In an Instagram post from yesterday, Hugh displays both fists, one of which sporting Wolverineâs famous claws. It also had a cryptic tag, âWOLVERINEâ¦ONE LAST TIME. HJ.â Unless there is a storyline I am unaware of, that means March 3rd, 2017 with be it for the pairing of Jackman and the man who is the best he is at what does. This refutes an earlier report from February where the actor intimated he’d play the role until he died.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be released in May of 2016. As of right now, there is no word as to whether Jackman will be included in that film. If not, that is STILL eight movies over 17 years. As of this writing no one has played a superhero in feature films more times than Hugh Jackman. Just like with Connery as Bond or Reeve as Superman, all great things must come to an end. It is probably a good time for Hugh to call it a day. I don’t think a human being is supposed to have that many abs. I definitely do not envy the person that will eventually replace him (in the time it took to write that sentence, four more actors have played Spider-Man on the big screen).
Wolverine 3, as it is currently known until we get the eventual subtitle, will be written by David James Kelly and released by 20th Century Fox.
