There’s Going to Be an $80 million TETRIS Movie

I suppose in a world where they made a movie out of Battleship that was about alien invaders who for some reason take to the seas instead of the skies, it probably shouldn’t come as much surprise that any game or video game gets the feature film treatment…but falling blocks? A puzzle game? Now I’m typing a sentence that features “an $80 million Tetris movie is in the works” and it still feels weird. What has happened? Should the Green Arrow come after us? Have we failed this city?

The Tetris movie (still weird) will be a U.S./China collaboration between producer Larry Kasanoff (he produced the Mortal Kombat movies) and Chinese production house Seven Star Works founder Bruno Wu. Together, they will form Threshold Global Studios to release the film. And this isn’t a “we want to raise the money to make the movie” announcement either; financing is in place. It’s GOING to happen. Shooting will begin next year with executive producers and visual effects supervisors in place.

We really have no idea what exactly the movie will be about, but Kasanoff said in a statement: “For our debut project, Threshold Global Studios will bring one of the most beloved, cross-generational gaming brands in the world to the big screen as an epic, sci-fi thriller.”

I suppose it would have to be science fiction if there’s going to be a movie where giant blocks come down and they have to stack properly or else the world will implode. Or maybe it’ll be like The Last Starfighter and people playing Tetris finds the Earthlings who have to save an alien race from…giant killer blocks. I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around it.

Whether my head can fathom it or not, it’s happening. A Tetris movie. It is a brand that people know… Good luck!

What do you think about the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard of? Let us know in the comments below!

What if all the movies are Nintendo movies?!?!?!
