THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Season 7 Trailer Looks and Feels Like a Totally New Show

Goodbye Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and hello…supernatural terrorists?!

When The Vampire Diaries returns on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. for season 7 (aka the first season post-Dobrev’s exit), The CW supernatural drama is going to look and feel like a completely new show. And thank goodness for that! If TVD spent a whole season mourning Elena after all her epic goodbyes in the season 6 finale, watching the once-beloved fan-favorite show would turn into a chore.

But the season 7 trailer is finally here, and based on the new footage, we don’t have to worry about any more Elena angst. Instead, we’ve got the new, (slightly?) psychotic heretics to worry about!

Didn’t watch the season 6 finale? Had too much fun this summer and need a quick refresher on TVD lingo? Have no idea what “heretics” even means? Fear not! That’s what we’re here for. The heretics are the new big bads, and they’re Lily Salvatore’s (Annie Wersching) chosen “family” — not her biological sons Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) — of vampire/witch hybrids. They are completely, totally hellbent on making Mystic Falls their new home/war zone. They’re even kicking Damon and Stefan out of the Salvatore mansion, so clearly, they are evil and must be stopped.

Thought vampire/werewolf hybrid Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was bad? We haven’t seen anything yet. The bloody, action-packed trailer reveals that although the good vamps in Mystic Falls have made some kind of “deal” with these monsters, giving up Mystic Falls and everything and everyone within the town lines, that won’t stop them from wreaking as much havoc as possible. For fun. These heretics sure do sound like great citizens, huh? Let’s just hope they stay far, far away from the Mystic Grill.

Although it’s also possible that someone (cough, Damon, cough) won’t adhere to the whole “We don’t mess with them, they don’t mess with us” deal that Stefan is trying so hard to make work. He’s never been one to step aside and let the new bully take over. Or maybe it’s Bonnie (Kat Graham) who does something to upset the balance? In the trailer, she pleads with Enzo (Michael Malarkey) of all people to help her put a stop the heretics. And Enzo can never refuse a pretty girl asking him for a favor. Now that Caroline (Candice King) is busy making out with Stefan, Enzo needs a new, unattainable crush, after all!

Speaking of Stefan, his hero hair is about to grow three times its normal size this season. Not only is he finally making out with Caroline (it’s the year of Steroline, y’all!), he’s also making bombs. Yes, real bombs. Possibly vervain bombs. And that’s probably only the beginning of what he’s got planned for his lunatic mother and her so-called family.

There’s only one thing missing from the exciting new footage…or rather, make that two things: Matty Blue Eyes (Zach Roerig) and Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis)! Where do the two humans fall in the war between the heretics and the supernatural good guys? Hopefully they’re staying far away from all the bombs and blood…but not too far away. TVD wouldn’t be the same without them.

Are you excited to see how The Vampire Diaries looks without Elena? Think these heretics are going to be even worse than Kai (Chris Wood)…something we never thought possible? Hit the comments below to weigh in!
