It looks like movement on the reboot of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles is happening faster than anticipated. Right on the heels of the news that Universal and Imagine Entertainment are rebooting the series of novels for the big screen, word comes from The Wrap that there is already a director in place. Josh Boone, who had a sizable hit with this summer’s adaptation of popular novel The Fault in Our Stars, is being eyed to both write and direct. Producers Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have reportedly already signed off on Boone’s hiring as director and, according to The Wrap’s sources, it’s all but a done deal.

Before Josh Boone can direct Lestat’s big comeback however, he’s going to direct an adaptation of another seminal ’80s horror novel, Stephen King’s The Stand, as one giant three hour epic film. The Stand has been in development for years, but Boone started from scratch after several failed attempts from filmmakers like Ben Affleck and Harry Potter director David Yates. He will likely only be able to devote time to the vampires after that project has been completed, so we are probably a few years away from seeing this movie hit movie theaters.

This new adaptation will simply be called Lestat, and combine elements of both the second and third books in the series, The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. The last time those two books were combined, it resulted in the critically reviled movie version of Queen of the Damned starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend. Although, unlike that version, this time the film is expected to stay faithful to its source material. According to reports, Lestat won’t be a reboot of Interview with the Vampire, even though Universal has the rights to that novel as well.
