The Trek Initiative: Engage!

Star Trek fans, get ready to be more excited than you were by the last Into Darkness trailer. At the Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo (or C2E2, of course) today, Wikia and Roddenberry Entertainment will announce the launch of The Trek Initiative, the first-ever Roddenberry-sanctioned Star Trek portal online. It will offer a place for the millions of Trek fans worldwide to gather, communicate, and collaborate around the franchise they love so dearly. Rod Roddenberry, son of Gene, will be the guest of honor at Wikia’s VIP party in The Paris Room tonight to celebrate the partnership.

What fans will get out of this, other than the convenience of one-stop satisfaction of all their phaser needs, is access to exclusive, never-before-seen or heard content from the Roddenberry archives. This will include pictures from the set of Star Trek and personal family photos and audio recordings of Gene Roddenberry, such as the commencement speech from 1976 that will be available at launch. Rod Roddenberry will also have a blog exclusive to the Trek Initiative that will give fans a new perspective on all things Trek.

From the official press release:
For anyone who ever uttered the words, “To boldly go” or “Make it so” the Trek Initiative will essentially become a destination to celebrate all that Trek and community stand for and serve as a gateway to everything Trek on the Web. It will include a directory for all Trek sites and bring together the over 30 communities currently on Wikia.com, including two of the largest on the internet – Memory Alpha and Memory Beta (which together consist of over 35,000 pages of rich content).

A consolidated consortium of Star Trekking on the internet? Sign us (and beam us) up. Find out more information at The Trek Initiative itself. It’s live! And for more Roddenberry-sponsored boldly-going, make sure you listen to Mission Log, a weekly podcast looking at individual Star Trek episodes.

We hosted Rod Roddenberry at a small convention in Milwaukee about 10 years ago as a Guest of Honor. He seemed to be experiencing the convention and gaming scenes for the first time. He was entertaining and approachable. I wish him the best.
