The Top of the World Looks Rough in First EVEREST Trailer

People can say Mount Everest is the tallest point on Earth (29,029 feet), they can list details about how hard it is to breathe up there, and how much effort and gumption it takes to climb it with day-packs and Sherpas, but until you actually see photos or video of people climbing and walking on it, it’s not really a real concept. But the new trailer for the based-on-a-true-story film Everest will give you a little bit of context, as will the tagline: Human beings are not meant to survive at the cruising altitude of a 747″. No, we aren’t.

The film is based on several memoirs about a disastrous 1996 expedition that was beset by a freak snow storm, directed by Baltasar Kormákur — the Icelandic helmer of Contraband and 2 Guns. From the looks of this first trailer, it’s going to be an old school survival adventure with harrowing stunts and gorgeous photography — IMAX 3D photography, to be exact, something that will surely make me as terrified as possible because I’m afraid of feeling small and insignificant.

With an impressive cast including Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, John Hawkes, Emily Watson, and Sam Worthington, this movie is bound to have some stellar performances just judging by the teaser alone. It comes out on September 18th, so we’re going to have a long summer to wait to see how everything unfolds.

Word of warning: Do not look up the actual events of the 1996 disaster unless you want to be spoiled. The movie doesn’t change a lot of the names of real people. Caution when Wikipediaing.
