David Bowie rejections have quickly become the most coveted stories in music.

Over the past few weeks, some of the most world’s biggest rock stars have stepped forth with their own stories of Bowie’s frank dismissals. Anthony Kiedis, Coldplay, Bono…even knighthood wasn’t to Bowie’s liking. Now you can add Dave Grohl to the exclusive “Bowie Didn’t Like It” list.

Grohl, while driving through some of Bowie’s favorite LA spots with Pat Smear (check out the video above), remembers the time he approached the icon with a new song he’d written for an unnamed film. Bowie responded with his signature candor: “David, I watched the movie and I’ve got to be honest, it’s not my thing … I’m not made for these times. So thanks, but I think I’m gonna sit this one out.”

Grohl was bummed (though that’s a way easier letdown than Coldplay’s “It’s not a very good song, is it?”), but he responded understandingly. Bowie then replied: “Alright, well that’s settled, then. Now fuck off.”

Whether that was irritation or the kind of British humor that Americans only half understand, Grohl wasn’t sure. The Foo Fighters frontman countered, “Well, I guess I’ll see you in another 16 years,” referencing Bowie’s 50^th birthday party at Madison Square Garden in 1997, the last time he saw him.

Ziggy bested Grohl once again, this time turning down darker roads that, in retrospect, have become all the darker: “Don’t hold your breath. … No more birthdays, I’ve run out of them … But that was a really fun night, wasn’t it?”

Grohl wins at having the best Bowie rejection story to date.
