Before watching this video we were sure we all still wanted to be astronauts. Afterwards, not so much. This gameplay video of the upcoming title Adr1ft has sufficiently scared us enough to keep our feet firmly on the ground for the foreseeable future.
This video – which was released in March of this year – gives us an eerie 9 minutes of oxygen-deprived nail-biting. The game, in what the developers nonchalantly describe as “An FPX about an astronaut in peril” might be the understatement of the year. At first glance, what essentially appears to be Gravity the video game, is a beautiful zero-gravity first person game in which you maneuver through the space station after a catastrophe.
ADR1FT is an immersive First Person Experience (FPX) that tells the story of an astronaut in peril. Floating silently amongst the wreckage of a destroyed space station with no memory and a severely damaged EVA suit slowly leaking oxygen, the only survivor struggles to determine the cause of the catastrophic event that took the lives of everyone on board. The player fights to stay alive by exploring the wreckage for precious resources, and overcomes the challenges of an unforgiving environment to repair the damaged EEV and safely return home.
We’re fine with zero-gravity. We’re fine with space wreckage. We’re even fine with peril. What we cannot deal with is the nerve-racking slow leak of oxygen that will be a constant cause of stress. Any titles that deal with air supply of any sort cause major anxiety problems in us ever since the underwater levels in Ninja Turtles for NES. So a game where the main concept appears to be “Try not to suffocate in space” is terrifying and despite literally taking place in wide open space, is somehow very claustrophobic.
The best part might be that Adr1ft is going to be available for the Oculus Rift and so as long as they can develop a way to soundproof our space-madness induced screams, we can’t wait to play when it comes out in September 2015!
