Cowabunga! We have a sweet little treat for old-school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans this fine day. One that may even help pull those of you dreading the upcoming Michael Bay reboot of the Turtles’ film franchise out of your funk. Way back in 1990, the year of the Turtles’ first live-action film, the Heroes in a Half Shell launched a Pizza Hut-sponsored Broadway concert tour, dubbed Coming Out of Their Shells, in which Don, Leo, Raph, and Mike played power pop on stage and saved April O’Neil from the clutches of Shredder.
As part of their tour, the foursome even made a stop on The Oprah Winfrey Show — and some forward-thinking soul recorded it on VHS and uploaded it to YouTube… Is it just me, or, in the video that follows, does one of the Turtles sound suspiciously like Charlie Day? Of course Day was only fourteen at the time, and more than likely wasn’t doing Turtle voice work. But it does please me to think that in some parallel universe the Bay reboot has the Turtles 1.) keeping their snouts, and 2.) voiced by Day and his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Danny DeVito — and April voiced by their leading lady Kaitlin Olson. Ah, if only…
Anyway, now you can enjoy some Turtles lore that you more than likely missed. (Unless you were regularly watching Oprah back in 1990.) So heat up a slice of pizza, kick back, and enjoy an all but forgotten piece of history.
these are not the ones from the movie….NEXT!!!
haha wtf they dont have shells
The one guy sounds like Charlie Day, yes… but Raph sounds EXACTLY like Bob Odenkirk
Oh man, I totally had one of those concerts on VHS when I was a kid! …The memories…
I think that was the original Donny voice by Corey Feldman, but I’m not sure.
looked more like toads than turtles
one of them sounded like Cliff from Cheers
Anyone who refers to the cartoon and prior movie TMNT as “old-school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” doesn’t know what they’re talking about really, in that context. A pity the original characters were practically wiped away by being “kiddified” out of existence.
Oh my holy crap! Turtles calling Oprah, “Babe”
