The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is tasked with a mission of both infinite possibility and endless challenge: To boldly go where no one has gone beforeânamely, in space, the iconic final frontier mentioned in nearly every iteration of Star Trek. For 50 years now, Star Trek has thrilled and delighted sci-fi fans while pushing boundaries of the very genre it has helped to define.
Part of its endless appeal is the complex, interpersonal relationships between the crew members, something the modern Kelvin Universe canon has taken to heart. Yet, rather than retreading familiar ground and showing us the deep personal bond between Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock, Star Trek Beyond placed a greater focus on what may seem like an unlikely pairing to some: Spock and Lieutenant Commander Leonard “Bones” McCoy.
Portrayed by Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban, respectively, Spock and Bones effectively steal the show in Star Trek Beyond through their delightfully dry banter and true-blue camaraderie. Naturally, I had to know more, so at a recent press day in Los Angeles, I sat down with director Justin Lin, writer/star Simon Pegg, and star Karl Urban to talk about the inimitable Spock!Bones dynamic, as well as celebrating the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
