The Spirits Are Back with the Release of YO-KAI WATCH 2

Do you believe in Yo-Kai? Yo-Kai are all around us, “causing you problems, messing up your hair… they’ll trip you up, give you a flat tire, or make your socks go missing in the dryer.” You probably already know that the popular video game has spawned an animated show on Disney XD, as well as a line of toys from Hasbro. But there’s more on the way!

Yo-Kai Watch is so popular that this month, two versions of the Nintendo 3DS sequel will be released: Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls. Nerdist was invited to the game’s launch party, which took place in a faux subway station. Greeting us upon entry was none other than Nate and a life-sized Jibanyan, who encouraged us to dig into an array of Yo-Kai-themed food, like Spirit Donuts and Roughraff’s favorite soba noodles.

Host Mark Ballas of Dancing with the Stars put our skills to the test as guests danced away to the Yo-Kai dance. Incorporating movement into gaming was a key component of Yo-Kai Watch 2 as fitness guru Billy Blanks Jr. took the stage to take everyone to Beat Camp. The character Burly was based on Blanks, who got the crowd moving to the beat.

Just as the crowd started working up a sweat, the subway doors opened and we entered the Yo-Kai Watch city of Springdale. Here, we were introduced to new Hasbro toys that let you interact even further into the Yo-Kai universe.

The games featured over 350 Yo-Kai to friend and battle. You can even travel back in time to meet classic Yo-Kai. I played both games and at one point found a giant donut and even more Yo-Kai cats, I’m definitely all in on both of those things. The game also features a multi-player Blasters mode which allows you to team up with three friends. This was by far the most fun—you get to work together as a group, which is a nice break from single-play.

Nintendo had one more big announcement for us: on October 15 the Yo-Kai Watch movie will debut in 300 movie theaters across the country for one day only. A great event for Yo-Kai fans who have been watching faithfully on the small screen.

Do you think Yo-Kai are all around us? I think one is next to me right now. Let us know in the comments!
