This year marks my tenth anniversary since graduating high school. With my ten-year reunion looming on the horizon, I find myself wondering what happened to the people with whom I used to spend eight hours each day trapped in a publicly funded knowledge prison. Did they become actuaries? Did they get married? Did they transform their body into an Adonis-like physique and use their hulking musculature to run black ops for the CIA? The answer to the first two is probably “yes,” but the third question only holds true for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the new trailer for Central Intelligence.
On Wednesday, New Line Cinema released a new trailer for director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s new action comedy, which stars Kevin Hart as Calvin, an accountant who used to be the most popular kid in school, and Johnson as Bob, a formerly overweight student who used to be teased about his weight, who works as a contract killer for the CIA. Initially, Calvin doesn’t recognize his former classmate, since he transformed himself from a weirdly pudgy CGI creation into, well, The Rock. So, how did he do it? “I just did one thing,” Bob says. “I worked our for six hours a day, every day, for the last 20 years.” Based on The Rock’s legendary cheat meals and constant stream of workout photos on Instagram, that sounds about right.
Here is the official synopsis:
“The story follows a one-time bullied geek, Bob, who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent (Dwayne Johnson), coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of former ‘big man on campus,’ Calvin (Kevin Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what heâs getting into, itâs too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than Calvin can count.”
Arguably more interesting than the entirety of the trailer is the fact that while filming Central Intelligence in Massachusetts, The Rock sideswiped a truck belonging to a man from my hometown, Audie Bridges. Fun fact: Bridges is an exceedingly talented musician and one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. It just goes to show you that you never know who from your past will one day have their motor vehicle damaged by a Hollywood celebrity.
Central Intelligence, which also stars Amy Ryan and Aaron Paul, opens on June 17.
