THE PUNISHER Gets His Own TV Series on Netflix

From the moment that Jon Bernthal was cast as the Punisher for Daredevil’s second season, it was clear that Marvel and Netflix had big plans for the character. Today, the long-rumored Punisher series was confirmed, and Frank Castle is coming back soon!

Entertainment Weekly broke the story about The Punisher series, which has Bernthal lined up to reprise his role once again. The Punisher has already hired Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) to act as the showrunner. No other cast members have currently been announced, but the second season finale of Daredevil hinted at the inclusion Microchip (a.k.a. Micro), Castle’s right-hand man from Marvel’s comic book universe. Because the Punisher’s origin story was already told in Daredevil, the new series can presumably hit the ground running without retreading that material. The Punisher was previously adapted into three feature films, none of which fully captured the spirit of the character.

Netflix also dropped the following video on twitter to tease The Punisher series.

There’s currently no release date for The Punisher, and this is the first show to exceed the initial four-series order that Marvel previously struck with Netflix—which included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the yet-to-air Luke Cage and The Defenders miniseres. But with a showrunner in place, The Punisher’s first season could be on Netflix as soon as next year. Additionally, the EW report teases that Bernthal’s Punisher may also appear in The Defenders.
