Salutations, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again—time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations. And for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This week we’ve got brand new start to Wonder Woman, more of The Fix, and the further adventures of the world’s greatest superhero, Ninjak.

WONDER WOMAN: REBIRTH #1

Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1 from DC Comics

Wonder Woman is one of DC’s greatest assets. She’s a kick-butt character that can be used in your standard superhero fare as well as in epic sword-and-sandal adventures. She got potential in every inch of her being. Sure, her series floundered a bit recently, but there’s a bright new course being charted under the direction of Greg Rucka, Matthew Clark, and Liam Sharp. If you’ve never read a Wonder Woman series before, the creative team makes it very clear that you can start here and be fine. They literally punch the past in the face—yes, literally! They make Wonder Woman punch it—and embrace change and rebirth. Any time Rucka scripts a series, you know you best pay attention, so Wonder Woman: Rebirth is already in a win. Add in some solid line work from Matthew Clark and a handful of truly stunning pages from Liam Sharp and you have a must-buy comic. We can’t wait to see where this one goes.

THE FIX #3

The Fix #3 from Image Comics

I don’t want to oversell this, but The Fix is the best comic book series ever. Think of your favorite series. Think of the series that changed the way you thought about comics, the series that truly touched you and made you a better person. You have it in your mind? Good, now push it aside, because The Fix is better. Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber have found such a unique and genuinely hilarious voice in this book, it’s hard to remember what the world was like before it was in our lives. A bleak, sad place—I can tell you that much. The Fix #3 plays out almost like a one-shot, a little side story that is funny and depressing all at once. It seems like it’s going to be wrapped up nicely in a little bow and then the ending comes and punches you in the junk. The last few pages are so insane, you have to up your dose of Ativan just to get you through the weeks until the next issue is released. The Fix is a good comic, that’s what I’m getting at.

NINJAK #16

Ninjak #16 from Valiant Comics

Ninjak continues to be our favorite superspy-action-hero comic book. Matt Kindt continues to amaze as he finds new and unique situations to showcase what an awesome badass Ninjak is. In this issue, we get to watch as the purple warrior (that’s my little nickname for him) battles his way through the bad guy underground in search of those who set him up. He threatens puppies, sticks people’s hands in garbage disposals, and generally murders a whole bunch of bad dudes. He does all of this and then complains about the lack of hypoallergenic pillows at his hotel. Ninjak, we love you. Diego Bernard continues to be an ace up Valiant’s sleeve, providing some truly stellar cartooning. His style is energetic and fluid, like the best of the early Image Comics days. Ninjak continues to impress and we continue to buy it, month after month.

HOUSE OF PENANCE #3

House of Penance #3 from Dark Horse Comics

Shame on us for not talking about House of Penance earlier. This series is bloody brilliant, with an emphasis on bloody. It tells the story of the Winchester House, although it is twisted through a Lovecraftian lens. Peter J. Tomasi and Ian Bertram are bringing nightmares to life on every page of this comic and we love every inch of it. There ghosts, strange blood tentacles, mega doses of insanity, and a quest for redemption. Ian Bertram’s art is out of this world, frightening and detailed to the point of pure horror. We highly, highly suggest you go pick up the first two issues of this series and consume them by candlelight with the ghosts of your past lurking over your shoulder. Ugly, scary, and demented, House of Penance is simply wonderful.
