Welcome back to The Pull List, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics, maybe a Christmas gift or two. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations, and for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. Seems like no books make it past issue #5 before they are rebooted, retooled, and rereleased these days. As such, we have a couple #1s for you, a #2, and the oldest, most senior member of the group, a #3.

WEIRDWORLD #1

We told you early this week that Weirdworld #1 was the best book of the week, and we were–as usual–one hundred percent correct. This new spin on an old Marvel concept is a must-read any way you cut it. It’s weird (duh), funny, dark, and strangely heartfelt. Sam Humphries delivers the goods in the story department and Mike Del Mundo elevates this thing to “Holy Crap My Eyes Are Burning From the Beauty” levels with his art. Buy this book and then rub it all over your nude body in order to absorb its essence. Consume it. Live it.

JUDGE DREDD #1

Judge Dredd #1 from IDW Comics

Judge Dredd has had some weird adventures (weird seems to be a theme this week). In his newly relaunched IDW series, things get even weirder. In the opening pages, Dredd wakes up in a field, his whole world seemingly gone. Is he in the past or some sort of stone age future? We don’t know for sure, but we do know he’s Dredd–and nobody puts Dredd in a corner. This comic is fun stuff and features some stunning artwork from Dan McDaid. Violent, strange, and action packed, this is everything you could ask for in a Judge Dredd comic.

THE GODDAMNED #2

The Goddamned #2 from Image Comics

The Goddamned is an ugly comic book series. It’s about the ugliest, most violent time in supposed human history, but Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera somehow take it ten steps further. We loved the first issue and we are equally in love with the second. It’s hard to say how long these guys can keep this level of mayhem up, but we excited to ride this train for as long as it’s lasts.  These blood-soaked pages are so brutal and depraved you almost feel guilty for reading them. But hey, it’s the holiday season and you’ve been good all year, so enjoy some panels of severed heads, cleaved skulls, and splattered blood. ‘Tis the season, after all.

I HATE FAIRYLAND #3

If you are not already reading this series you have seriously messed up in life. I don’t want to call you a “failure,” but there really is no other word. I Hate Fairyland #3 is ridiculous, weird, funny, and violent (violence is this week’s other theme). Skottie Young’s demented trip through the whimsical Fairyland starts with narrators getting axed in the head and ends with bloody, broken bones. This series is like doing rails of cocaine off of the board game Candyland. It’s rainbows and lollypops soaked in the blood of demons. It’s damn near perfect and something that you should be reading the hell out of.
