Howdy, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations, and for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This time around we worship at the alter of a Parker and Shaner team up, and express our undying love for Matt Kindt.

FUTURE QUEST #1

Future Quest #1 from DC Comics

On the surface, the chief appeal of Future Quest #1 is the collection of Hanna-Barbera action characters. Sticking them all together in a big, explosive shared universe where they team up to save the galaxy? Totally awesome. However, the truth of the situation is that the big draw here is Jeff Parker and Evan Shaner. These guys have produced some of the best superhero comics to come out in years, like their glorious run on Flash Gordon. Parker and Shaner make any book a must read title, and in this case the Hanna-Barbera characters are just the icing on their delicious cake. This issue is tons of fun and absolutely beautiful. You have color sorceress Jordie Bellaire and the mighty Steve Rude in here, too? People, this is comic book perfection! It’s stunning, like falling in love on a warm summer night. It’s incredible, and you have to buy it. No options here, folks. Go buy it.

Dept. H #2 from Dark Horse Comics

Oh, Matt Kindt, what do we love about you? We love you’re slow-burn murder mystery. We love your sense of atmosphere and dread. We love your pacing. We love your art. We love your use of black to show the vast horrors of the ocean. We love just about everything about Dept. H. This draws us in even more, showing what our intrepid protagonist is up against and it’s more than sabotage and deception. It’s more than a giant squid (holy crap there is a giant squid). She’s been isolated, for years, maybe her whole life. In an endless quest for life, she’s only pushed everything living further and further away from her. It’s beautiful and haunting, a meditation on life and death that we simply can’t get enough of. Kindt, we love you. Hopefully this isn’t too forward, but we had to say it. We love you.

SECOND SIGHT #4

Second Sight #4 from AfterShock Comics

AfterShock Comics have put out some great comics lately, but Second Sight is probably our favorite. This issue is full of twists and turns, but the end result is always darkness. Ray Pilgrim is a man surrounded by death; it swarms around him, it haunts him. Bad things seem to follow Pilgrim, and it’s hard to see any sort of happy ending here. It’s filled with sex (the nightmarish variety), mystery, and a punk rock aesthetic. David Hine and Alberto Ponticelli are really in step here, producing a book that is tone-perfect from head to toe. There’s nothing in Second Sight, that is not working. There’s good chance that this book is flying under your radar, but it’s a title you need to dig into.  This is the ugliest comic on the stands and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
