Welcome back to The Pull List, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations. And for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This time around, we fell hard for Faith, enjoyed the violence of old man Conan, and simply adored Cry Havoc. Oh, and The Goddamned is goddamn awesome.

FAITH #2

Faith #2 from Valiant Comics

The second issue of Faith continues one of the superhero world’s most compelling stories. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more sincere character in all of comics, and that’s largely because of the talents of writer Jody Houser. She makes Faith relatable, believable, and most of all, inspiring. There’s a reason folks on Twitter are often passing around the #FlyLikeFaith hashtag. It’s because she’s a character worth admiring. Francis Portela’s storytelling is smooth and detailed, delivering the narrative with a crispy, clear vision. Plus, you get more of Marguerite Sauvage’s stunning dream sequences. Faith #1 was damn near perfect and #2 continues that trend.

THE GODDAMNED #3

The Goddamned #3 from Image Comics

Never has such beauty been used to show something so ugly. The Goddamned is one of the most beautiful comics in recent memory, and it’s possibly the ugliest book ever produced. Dirty, hateful, and violent, you feel like you need a bath after reading an issue. It’s like a drug—you know it’s tearing up whatever shriveled mess you call a soul, but you can’t stop. You can’t look away. Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera stick a sharped bone into your heart and they twist it. This issue is just as insane, violent, and dark as the two that came before, which means it’s bloody brilliant. Literally, bloody. We might be damning ourselves to eternal torment, but we need more of The Goddamned and we need it now.

KING CONAN: WOLVES BEYOND THE BORDER #3

Every Conan book Dark Horse Comics puts out is good. Seriously, every one. The high point in that sea of awesomeness is the King Conan comics. We’ve told you how much we love this series before, and with each issue we love it a little more. We love Timothy Truman’s epic writing. We love, love, love Tomas Giorello’s art. You could put this issue up against the best looking comics on the stands and it would still come out on top. It’s utterly unreal. It helps that Giorello really gets to cut loose in this month, too. Lots of nude women, bloody violence, and sinister monsters. King Conan is what a comic book looks like when the creative team is firing on all cylinders. Violent, gory, and sexy, this is Conan done right.

CRY HAVOC #2

Can we just fast forward to the end of the year when Cry Havoc wins all the awards? Werewolves, giant boar monsters, and the sort of intensity that drips off the page, Cry Havoc is stunning beyond belief. Ryan Kelly is a grandmaster, a king of storytelling and horror. He draws the smaller, subtle moments with as much detail and precision as he does the huge scenes of gore and violence. The lettering by Simon Bowland is smooth as French Silk Pie, and the coloring is amazing times three. If you are not buying this book, you don’t deserve love and happiness in your life. You’re a bad person. Redeem yourself and buy Cry Havoc, it’s your only chance at salvation.
