Salutations, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again; time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations, and for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This week is filled with candy-coated mayhem, trips to hell, and more Marvel #1s than you can shake a stick at. After all, if there’s one thing you can count on in life, it’s Marvel #1s.

Oh, Skottie Young, you demented wizard. I Hate Fairyland just gets brighter, sweeter, more violent, and more insane with every issue. This time around we learn that Gertrude’s ability to survive the constant violence of Fairyland might be coming to an end, and when you get a look at some of the stuff that happens to her in this issue, you’ll know that’s not a good thing. It’s amazing how such a cartoony, bright, and seemingly adorable comic can be so bloody, violent, and sinister. Seriously, I Hate Fairyland is as addicting as gummy bears. Or cocaine. Or maybe a mixture of the two.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1

Captain Marvel has been one of my favorite Marvel comics ever since Kelly Sue DeConnick placed Carol Danvers in the role. She crafted something truly special with this character. which is why this issue had me a little concerned. Captain Marvel without DeConnick seemed impossible, but it turns out that’s not the case. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters do a fantastic job with Danvers’ new status quo, creating a fun and exciting comic book. They’re the duo behind the excellent Agent Carter TV show, which had its second season premiere on Tuesday evening, and it’s clear they have the chops to write a fantastic comic book series. Kris Anka’s art is great, as well, delivering an athletic, buff version of Captain Marvel as opposed to the curvy, soft leading ladies that populate so many comics. For the time being, Captain Marvel appears to be in good hands.

THE HANGMAN #2

The Hangman #2 from Dark Circle Comics

The Hangman is a pretty messed up comic book. The first issue featured our main character covering a guy in jelly and then letting a bunch of rats eat him alive. That’s our starting point, guys. It only gets crazier and more deranged from there. Frank Tieri and Felix Ruiz are sick dudes, and the seem to relish in the darkness and violence of The Hangman. We spend a lot of time in Hell in this issue — literally in Hell with Satan and brimstone and everything — and learn exactly what it means to be The Hangman. More so than the first issue, this one sets up the status quo for the series, and it looks like we are headed for more violence, brutality, and gore. Dark Circle Comics isn’t pulling any punches with their new line of books, and The Hangman proves that just about anything goes.

SILVER SURFER #1

Silver Surfer #1 from Marvel Comics

When Dan Slott and Michael Allred took over Silver Surfer, they injected the title with an overdose of fun. Slott often cited Doctor Who as major influence on the series, and it’s easy to see element of the classic sci-fi series all over this thing. This new issue might have a shiny “#1” on the cover, but it’s more like the beginning of a new season, continuing the same story and set-up that Allred and Slott had going previously. This is not to say that you should be worried about jumping into the series with this issue, because you totally can. You get everything you need here to have a good time and trip through space with the Silver Surfer and his companion. Plus, when Michael Allred draws a comic book, you should just buy it. Period. Nobody draws comics like him. Nobody.
